Couchbase Cookie Policy

Introduction

This policy explains how and why Couchbase uses cookies and other similar tracking technologies, and the choices that you have to control and manage them.

What is a Cookie?

A cookie is a small text file that is placed on your computer or device as you browse the internet and used to collect and remember bits of information about your browsing activity.

Cookies are typically assigned to one of four categories, depending on their function and intended purpose: strictly necessary cookies, performance cookies, functional cookies and targeted advertising cookies.

1. Strictly Necessary Cookies: These cookies are essential for our website to function and to enable you to use its features. You can set your browser to block these cookies but some parts of the website and functionality may then not work.

2. Performance Cookies: These cookies collect information about how you use our website. Information collected includes, for example, the internet browser and operating system used, the domain name of the website previously visited, the number of visits, average duration of visit, and pages viewed. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. Performance cookies are used to improve the user-friendliness of the website and improve your experience.

3. Functionality Cookies: These cookies allow us to remember the choices you make on our website (such as user name, language or the region you are in) and therefore provide enhanced, more personal features. The information these cookies collect may be anonymised, and they cannot track your browsing activity on other websites.

4. Targeted Advertising Cookies: These cookies are used to deliver adverts more relevant to you and your interests. They are also used to limit the number of times you see an advertisement as well as help measure the effectiveness of the advertising campaigns. These cookies are set on our website by our advertising partners who build a profile of your interests to show you relevant advertisements as you browse the internet or use device applications. For further information about targeted advertising, please see the section below on targeted advertising.

Managing Cookies

You can manage cookies in your browser settings, and you always have the choice to change these settings by accepting, rejecting or deleting cookies. Please refer to the relevant settings within your browser.

Other Similar Tracking Technologies

In addition to cookies, Couchbase uses other technologies to collect information about your interaction with our services:

Web server and application logs: Our servers automatically collect certain information about your computer or devices when you interact with our services. This information includes:

  • IP address (which can reveal the city, state and country from which you access our services)
  • Device attributes such as browser type, browser language and operating system
  • Device information including unique device identifiers such as MAC address, IMEI, advertising ID
  • Usage data such as information related to the ways in which you interact with the services, pages and content viewed, date and time you used the services, frequency of your use of the services, URLs of referring and exit pages

Web beacons: Our website pages may contain electronic images known as web beacons that we use to help deliver cookies on our website, count visitors, deliver services and analyse the effectiveness of our promotional campaigns. We may also use web beacons in our marketing email messages or newsletters to determine whether an email is opened or links are clicked.

Local shared objects (aka ‘flash cookies’): These cookies are usually used to enable video content and, like other cookies, will store information on your device. Flash cookies operate differently than browser cookies, and cookie management tools available in a web browser will not remove flash cookies. To learn more about how to manage flash cookies, please visit the Adobe website at www.adobe.com.

Why does Couchbase use Cookies and Other Similar Tracking Technologies?

Couchbase uses cookies and other similar tracking technologies to provide our services and help collect data. We do this to understand your use of our websites, emails, mobile applications and services; improve your user experience and enable personalized features and content; optimize our marketing; and to enable third party advertising companies to assist us in serving advertising specific to your interests across the internet.

Targeted Advertising

Couchbase has engaged one or more third party marketing service providers to display our advertising on other websites and mobile applications. These third parties use cookies, web beacons and similar tracking technologies to collect and use certain information about your online activities, either on our websites and/or other sites or mobile apps, to infer your interests and deliver you targeted advertisements that are more tailored to you based on your browsing activities and inferred interests. The information collected by these third parties does not include personal information that enables you to be specifically identified (e.g. by reference to your name or email address).

For more information about targeted advertising, please visit https://www.networkadvertising.org/understanding-online-advertising/.

If you want to opt out of receiving targeted advertising, this does not mean that you will no longer receive advertising. It just means advertising content will not be customized to your inferred interests. You can opt out of targeted advertising at www.networkadvertising.org/choices o www.youronlinechoices.com or by clicking the AdChoices icon in an online advertisement and following the instructions. Note, if you delete cookies, use a different device, or change web browsers, you may need to opt out again.

Mobile devices have an identifier that enables advertisers and marketing service providers to serve targeted advertisements to a specific mobile device. Each operating system (e.g. iOS, Android) provides its own instructions on how to turn off mobile device ad tracking or how to reset the advertising identifier within the mobile device privacy settings.

Changes to this Policy

If we make changes to this policy, we will post the revised policy on this website, and in the case of any material changes we shall notify you by email or other means before such material changes take effect. Your continued use of the services after the date the changes take effect shall be subject to the revised policy.
